Update from Cleveland Heights City Manager Tanisha R. Briley - May 8, 2020

As another week comes to a close, I’d like to recognize and thank all of the outstanding City employees who keep our City operating. I’d especially like to recognize the essential employees who have continued to do their jobs during this unprecedented time. Public Service Recognition Week is a great time to recognize the many important functions of the City of Cleveland Heights team.

As you likely heard from the Governor, Ohio will begin re-opening hair salons, barbershops, nail salons, spas, and restaurants and bars (outside dining) on May 15. Inside dining will resume on May 21. I am sure you all join me in welcoming our business community back to work. Let’s be sure we show our support by buying local. Also, on Monday, May 12 much of our retail services will open. Online purchases and gift cards are always a great way to support our local merchants until the time that you can walk back in their doors and be greeted by the proprietor. Certain protocols will be put in place to continue to protect the health of employees, shoppers and diners. Please do your part to protect yourself and the community by wearing a face covering.

Cuyahoga County Receives CARES Act Funding:  Cuyahoga County received $215 million in federal aid for expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions have been spent to date including $2 million to purchase PPE and $2.5 million for the Small Business Resource Center and the Small Business Stabilization Fund. Cleveland Heights received an additional $956,215 for 2020 in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG). These funds must be used according to HUD guidelines and staff is currently preparing a plan that will allow us to leverage these dollars for maximum flexibility and benefit in a way that is compliant with HUD rules.

The Cuyahoga County Small Business Stabilization Fund is now accepting applications for a second round of submissions from small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. The program provides one-time grants of between $2,500 and $5,000 for small businesses with less than 25 employees. This second round of funding is expected to provide grants to up to 600 small businesses. The first round of funding provided grants to 200 County businesses including 8 Cleveland Heights business.

I’d like to wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers. This year’s celebration will likely be different, but taking the time to express our appreciation to our mothers and the mother-like figures in our lives is something we can always do. A gift of take-out from any of our wonderful restaurants or a gift card from many of our merchants is a great gesture of appreciation. Let’s continue to support our local businesses
