Update from Cleveland Heights City Manager Tanisha R. Briley - April 3, 2020

Yesterday, Governor DeWine and Dr. Acton signed an extension to the Stay-At-Home order that was set to expire on April 6. Because of ongoing concerns, and the ongoing spread of COVID 19 (Coronavirus), the new order is in effect until May 1, 2020. During this time City facilities will remain closed to the public. But, as has been the case these past two weeks, all essential duties will continue. This includes the exceptional work of our Police, Fire and Public Works teams. Others that are behind the scenes will continue to do their work from the office or as much as possible through telework. As a reminder, a full list of contact information is available online and your calls or emails will be responded to. We just continue to ask your patience as we work with a greatly reduced staff.

The Monday, April 6, City Council meeting at 7:30 pm will be live streamed on YouTube Live. Please visit www.youtube.com/c/cityofclevelandheights/live to view the meeting.

Just a quick reminder that the City is still taking applications for the vacant Council seat. The application deadline for the vacant council seat has been extended until 5:00 pm on Monday, April 6, 2020. Please visit https://www.clevelandheights.com/1085/City-Council-Application for more details.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major disruption in the lives of most Americans. Paying rent and utilities may be a struggle for many, which in turn, creates a hardship for property owners who have mortgage responsibilities. I have heard wonderful examples of landlords working with their tenants to help them maneuver through this challenging time. Reducing or deferring rent can make a big difference in the lives of families, and I commend those landlords who are working individually with their tenants to find a solution. With Governor DeWine’s Order encouraging lenders to provide loan relief, we are hopeful that more cooperative arrangements between tenants and landlords can be reached.

Unfortunately, some may not be able to reach agreement on payment arrangements. If you are a renter and are concerned about this issue, there are resources available to you. View and download the City of Cleveland Heights Renters Resource Guide.

We have been experiencing an uptick in calls in regards to sewer backups. The Cleveland Heights Utility Division urgently reminds everyone that products like wipes, facial tissues and paper towels should NOT be flushed. Flushing products other than toilet paper or bodily waste endangers your home plumbing and our systems down the line.

Once again, I want to highlight what a truly amazing community Cleveland Heights is. This week, the City was honored by generous neighbors who made meaningful donations of needed supplies to the CHPD and CHFD. Yesterday, Mayor Stein, Police Chief Mecklenburg and Fire Chief Dave Freeman joined the President of Chaverim of Cleveland, Mr. Tzvi Turner, where he presented several boxes of masks and sanitizer wipes. Earlier in the week, Mr. Paul Shim, owner of Longwood Beauty Supply on Noble Road, also showed their community spirit by donating 144 masks and six boxes of gloves. Because these items are hard to come by, these generous donations are even more meaningful to our first responders. Thank you to both Mr. Paul Shim and Mr. Turner for their kind and generous donation, which will help keep our first responders safe and healthy.

The City would welcome similar donations if other organizations find that they may have a supply they are not currently needing.

As we continue to follow the Stay-At-Home order but long to explore the Great Outdoors beyond our neighborhoods, here are five national parks that offer virtual tours:

Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska (https://artsandculture.withgoogle.com/en-us/national-parks-service/kenai-fjords/exit-glacier-tour)
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii (https://artsandculture.withgoogle.com/en-us/national-parks-service/hawaii-volcanoes/nahuku-lava-tube-tour)
Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico (https://artsandculture.withgoogle.com/en-us/national-parks-service/carlsbad-caverns/natural-entrance-tour)
Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah (https://artsandculture.withgoogle.com/en-us/national-parks-service/bryce-canyon/sunset-point-tour)
Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida (https://artsandculture.withgoogle.com/en-us/national-parks-service/dry-tortugas/near-little-africa-tour).

I hope you will enjoy viewing the beauty across our great Country.
