Update from Cleveland Heights City Manager Tanisha R. Briley - April 1, 2020

With the President’s order to extend the social distancing guidelines of 6 feet or more through the end of April, our local businesses are unable to resume business as usual. That doesn’t mean we can’t continue to support them, though. Many of our restaurants and pubs are continuing to provide food and beverages by take-out or delivery. The City has been providing a list of businesses that remain open (https://www.clevelandheights.com/DocumentCenter/View/6500) and is updating it regularly as we get further information. Many of our merchants are offering their products via online purchases, so check out their websites. And, of course, most of our businesses do offer gift cards, which make good gifts for others or for yourself.

This is a difficult time for all of us, but our small businesses and their employees are especially hard hit. Please continue to support our local businesses - order take-out, buy gift cards, shop online.

Speaking of social distancing, we are still finding that some people are not following the Governor and CDC’s guidelines. This is not only putting these individuals at risk, but it also risks the health of others. Our Police Department continues to break up these gatherings, but it is imperative that we stress to our friends and family the importance of following these guidelines so we can stop the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) before we lose any more lives.

As of this afternoon, there were nearly 2500 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ohio. The Ohio Department of Health said 585 people were hospitalized because of the virus, and 198 Ohioans were in intensive care. Sixty-five individuals have unfortunately lost their lives due to complications from the COVID-19 virus.

It is important that you stay at home unless you have essential reasons to go out, such as grocery shopping, doctor visits, working in essential businesses or have essential duties. Visit our beautiful parks and take advantage of our walking and biking paths, but keep the proper distance. We need to fight this together.

Yesterday, Attorney General Yost shared nine tips to avoid falling prey to stimulus check scams. These scammers wasted no time setting up ways to try to cheat people out of this needed support. Be careful and if in doubt, don’t click on any links, and never give out personal information online or by phone.

Don’t forget that Ohio’s Primary election deadline has been moved to April 28 and will be vote-by-mail only. The primary election, originally scheduled for March 17, will no longer take place as an in-person election at polling locations. Due to the ongoing health crisis, voting will be conducted exclusively as a Vote-by-Mail election for all registered voters.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections should be contacted by anyone with questions or special circumstances. Call 216-443-VOTE (8683), and leave a voicemail or visit https://boe.cuyahogacounty.us/en-US/VoteByMail.aspx

Today is Census 2020 Day. If you haven’t yet completed the Census questionnaire, I hope you will take the time today https://2020census.gov/. It only takes around ten minutes to complete it online and will help determine the allocation of Federal and State funding for such thing as schools, transportation and infrastructure projects.

Lastly, please continue to be patient with us as we try to maintain essential services during this health crisis. Our Public Works Department is hard at work and managing with a reduced staff.

Loose leaf and yard waste collection is beginning this week and will run through the end of the month. As usual, pickup of these items is the same day or the following day of your regular pickup. The crew will come through every other week - two pickups during April. Please consult our website to determine your scheduled day https://www.clevelandheights.com/249/Leaf-Yard-Debris-Collection

With our community following safety guidelines, WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER!
