Update from Cleveland Heights City Manager Tanisha R. Briley - March 27, 2020

Cleveland Heights is a city full of special, caring people. Darryl Rugley, owner of GoodFellas BBQ on Noble Road is one such person. Mr. Rugley, thank you for your generosity and compassion in offering free meals to those in need!   https://www.cleveland.com/news/2020/03/vandalism-wont-stop-cleveland-heights-restaurant-owner-from-providing-free-meals-for-children-during-coronavirus-shutdown.html

Tommy’s on Coventry may have closed their doors 11 days ago but they continue to receive much love and compassion through messages, gift card purchases and kind words! On March 26, they were able to pay it forward by working with another community member. Tommy Fello’s family, Lindsay Fello Murphy and Alicia Stazzone, delivered gloves and treats to hospitals on the East and West side of Cleveland. "These donations don’t only come from us but from all of you that support us every day!! It’s all about connecting with each other and making the best of our situation! Love and gratitude to all!" Tommy stated. Cleveland Heights is so fortunate to have such a great community partner in Tommy Fello. This is just the tip of the iceberg of all that he, his family, and his employees do for our community. Thank you, Tommy!

Many thanks to our own Zagara’s Marketplace on Lee Road which is now serving as an additional meal pickup spot for families in need, each weekday beginning this past Wednesday. Pickup time there will begin at 1:30 p.m. Zagara’s once again is proving to be a valuable community partner.

Each weekday through April 3, free breakfast and lunch can be picked up at all other sites from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This food is available for any child whether or not they are our students. On Fridays at all pickup sites, 3 total breakfast/lunch combos can be picked up per child to last through the weekend.

"More than 75 families from our area receive free food and clothing every week" according to The Father Michael Wittman Ozanam Center (FMWOC), a local food pantry and clothing bank located at St. Philomena Church in East Cleveland. FMWOC is an all-volunteer organization and a registered agency with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. It is supported by 14 churches in the eastern suburbs including our Communion of Saints Parish and Church of the Saviour in Cleveland Heights.

“We need members of the community to help us, whether through financial contributions or donated items, or just by spreading the word to those who could benefit from our free services. Even a small donation will go a long way to help our neighbors in need,” noted board member Annette Cappaert. Financial donations can be made payable to Father Michael Wittman Ozanam Center c/o Communion of Saints Parish, 2175 Coventry Road, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118. For more information on the organization and its services, visit www.facebook.com/groups/FMWOC.

Important Reminder: Red Cross Blood Drive at Lee Road Library
Tuesday, March 31 starting at 10am at 2345 Lee Road

The Red Cross is currently experiencing a severe blood shortage due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Please give if you feel you can. The Red Cross is taking steps to ensure the safety of donors. Find out more here: https://www.redcrossblood.org/donate-blood/dlp/coronavirus--covid-19--and-blood-donation.html

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank needs donations of money, time and food. The demand for food has been extraordinary. They reported serving more than 4,000 individuals from nearly 1,500 households in one day this week. More than 50% of the clients were children and seniors. Two-thirds were new to the Food Bank and one-third were new to their network of partners, i.e. have not needed emergency food from any Food Bank, food pantry or mobile pantry in the past few years. That is sobering, to say the least.

If you wish to volunteer at the Food Bank, you must sign up in advance. Visit www.GreaterClevelandFoodBank.org/Volunteer to see available opportunities.

Also, donations would be appreciated, and would make a big difference, at the COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund of the United Way of Greater Cleveland. They have joined forces with a coalition of Northeast Ohio philanthropic partners to create the Greater Cleveland COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund to deploy resources to nonprofit organizations on the frontlines of the pandemic in our region. MetroHealth is offering medical support for district families. As a District partner, MetroHealth is offering prescription deliveries, telehealth visits and more for CH-UH families during the COVID-19 outbreak. Information on these programs can be found on the MetroHealth COVID-19 website. Or, call the MetroHealth COVID-19 support line at 1-440-592-6843 or contact Nancy Peppler, CH-UH Community and School Partnerships, at n_peppler@chuh.org.

BEWARE! Stimulus Check Scam – You may receive an email or phone call from somebody claiming to be from the IRS or another federal agency claiming that you need to go to a website and provide certain information in order to get your stimulus check. They will collect enough information to compromise and steal money from your bank accounts. No federal agency will ever contact you through an unsolicited phone call or email. Information on the stimulus program should only be secured through reputable sources, like www.irs.gov/.

I hope everyone has a safe weekend and stays healthy. Please continue to stay at home as much as possible, per the Governor’s order, and maintain the appropriate 6 feet of social distancing.
