Batteries

Batteries should be taken to a local retail store dropbox for recycling or to a local battery recycler. The retail store dropboxes are free and do not cost taxpayers any money. Businesses can recycle batteries through local specialized companies.

Fluorescent Bulbs

Fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and should not be placed in the regular trash. CFLs can be recycled for free at Lowe's or Home Depot stores. Bulbs from businesses should be recycled using a bulb recycler or hazardous waste company. Incandescent bulbs, LED and halogen bulbs go in the regular trash.

Paint

Paint is also not accepted for recycling. To prepare your paints for trash collection, please follow these guidelines:

  • Latex Paint: It must be dried out thoroughly before putting it out with refuse.  Mixing kitty litter or a product obtainable in the paint department of hardware or home improvement stores for solidifying paint will help it dry out quicker.
  • Oil-Based Paints: The Public Works Department will continue to collect oil-based paints as long as the lids are secured and cans are placed in an open cardboard box.

Styrofoam

Styrofoam Recycling Discontinued at Community Center

Cleveland Heights has been informed by CuyahogaRecycles that they will no longer be picking up or disposing of Styrofoam from the Community Center drop-off station. It will also not be picked up in curbside recycling. These items are no longer recyclable and should be disposed of in the regular trash.
