RECYCLE YOUR TECHNO-TRASH
The City of Cleveland Heights is now offering a
way for residents to safely reycycle their
techno-trash: old CDs, DVDs, diskettes, audio
and video
tapes, cell phones, pagers, PDAs, digital
cameras, rechargable batteries and inkjet and
laser cartridges.
Residents wishing to recycle their unwanted
items may bring them to the Technotrash Cans,
which are located in the Cleveland Heights City
Hall atrium, 40 Severance Circle, and at the
Community Center, Monticello Boulevard and
Mayfield Road.
Why use this recycling service for disposal of
your unwanted items?
Techno-trash contains huge amount of private
information on CDs, diskettes, tapes, hard drives
and other electronic media. Using this recycling
service guarantees complete security and keeps
the material out of landfills.
How are these items recycled?
Discarded items are collected into large
processable batches by GreenDisk for recycling.
The items are first separated into 'intellectual'
materials (hard drives, CDs, tapes) or any
material that could contain personal information.
These items are first degaussed (wiped clean
with magnetics). After that, they are separated
by primary material.
CDs and DVDs are then shredded and
sold in large loads to plastic recyclers. This is a
high grade plastic and the recycler removes the
metals. It is used primarily in the automobile
industry.
VCR tapes and audio tapes are a
separate type of plastic and the same process
hold true - items will be shredded and
consolidated into large quantities for recycling.
The precious metals are removed from digital
cameras and the metal and/or plastic is
separated. All materials are recycled.
Cell phones are evaluated for reuse. The
usable ones are donated to a charity such as
'Women in Crisis.' Others are sold to a recycler
for refurbishing and the rest are simply
disassembled and recycled by the product
involved (plastic, metal, etc.).
Inkjet and laser cartridges are evaluated
for resale (as we already do in Cleveland
Heights) or the plastic is recycled. Prior to the
plastic being recycled, the toner must be
removed.
